Bosnian Language

The Bosnian language is a South Slavic language with about 3.5 million speakers, written in both the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. It is spoken by Bosniaks, also called Bosnian Muslims, who comprise 43% of total population of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The language is considered to be mutually intelligible with both Serbian and Croatian, but it is not official in either country. The standard Bosnian language was developed in the 19th century based on the Shtokavian dialect that was widely used in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the time. The name "Bosnian language" is an umbrella term for three regional varieties of speech formally called Serbo-Croatian.
