Afrikaans Language

Afrikaans is a West Germanic language spoken in South Africa, Namibia, and to a lesser extent, Botswana and Zimbabwe. It evolved from the Dutch language after British settlers brought it to Southern Africa in the 17th century. Afrikaans speakers are referred to as "Afrikaners", or "Boere" (farmers). The term originally was used by Dutch settlers who noticed similarities between the Dutch they were speaking in South Africa and the Dutch of their native Holland. However, there is no direct relationship. The word itself means African in Dutch.
