Latvian Language

The Latvian language belongs to the Baltic language group and is one of the three official languages of Latvia (along with Russian and English). It is closely related to Lithuanian, although they are not mutually intelligible. The Latvian language has two dialects: Courlandian, which is used in western Latvia and the city of Liepāja, and Livonian, which is spoken in the city of Ventspils and other areas. Courlandian and Livonian have their own standardized varieties as well.
