Chinese Simplified Language

The Chinese language is made up of many different dialects. The most common dialect spoken in mainland China is called "Putonghua," or "common speech." It's also known as "Mandarin" after the official language of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Putonghua is based on the Beijing dialect, and it's been standardized for use in schools, the media and formal settings. Chinese people from Beijing often have a strong accent when speaking Putonghua, which can make it difficult for other Chinese to understand.
